Is Sarah Palin really the mother of her youngest “son”, Trig? It sounds outlandish to make the allegation that she might not be, but Daily Kos has some very interesting “evidence” making the case that her youngest son could, in fact, be her grandson. Wow.

You MUST read this.

Well, there you have it folks.

Senator McCain has named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Supporters of Senator Obama have praised his VP choice, Senator Joe Biden, for being a champion in the cause of combating poverty.

Let’s send a message to Sarah Palin that we would like her to do the same. Click here to send a postcard to Gov. Palin asking her to take a stand against global poverty.

A serial killer linked to 10 murders in South Central LA and Inglewood over nearly 20 years resurfaced last year to claim another victim, according to the LAPD.

The latest murder, which took place early last year, was tied by DNA evidence to the others. LAPD Detective Dennis Kilcoyne said “The day those tests came in, we realized we had a serial killer on our hands who has been active for 23 years”. Kilcoyne heads a task force of 7 detectives whose mission it is to solve the murders.

All of the victims, except for one black men, have been young black women who the killer sexually abused. The serial killer left most of the bodies in allies along Western Ave. in South LA.

Detectives theorize that most of the women were working as prostitutes when they were killed. In the light of the new information that shows the killer is still active, Kilcoyne and his team are retracing footsteps and trying to pick up on cold leads in hopes that they might find their man. The detectives have started examining nearly 3 dozen cases that are smiliar to the serial killer’s gunshot murders.

THE ROLE OF DNA TESTING

There is an interesting legal aspect to this case. LAPD has not been able to search “DNA banks” in the criminal database to find one of his close relatives, which could, obviously, provide them with a lead. The “familial searches” are seen by many to be an invasion of privacy and would require permission from the State Attorney General, whose office has not yet said whether he would approve such a search.

DNA testing can be a slippery slope. There are many angles to consider.

Gina Tenny

Gina Tenny

The 1985 murder of Gina Tenny, a 19-year-old college student from Ohio, was solved using DNA testing last year. At the time of her murder, police believed a man named Bennie Lee strangled and killed the young woman, but couldn’t prove it. Nobody was convicted in connection with the crime.

The Tenny case sat cold for over 20 years, until Ohio officials started a DNA database program for cold cases. Bennie Adams, the very person they suspected in 1985 was proved, through DNA evidence, to be Gina’s killer.

Even more disturbing than the fact that Adams “walked” in the first place: the following year, in 1986, Adams was convicted in the kidnapping, rape, and robbery of another Ohio woman. He was released from prison in 2004 after serving 18 years on those charges.

In October of last year, Adams, a registered sex offender, was finally arrested and charged with the murder of Gina Tenny.

PEOPLE FREED BECAUSE OF DNA TESTING

Every coin has two sides, and in the case of DNA testing, the flip side is that numerous people have been freed after serving time for crimes that weren’t theirs.

David Lee Scott

David Lee Scott

David Scott, an Indiana man, served more than 23 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

In 1984, when Scott was just 17, he was charged with murder and served over 23 years in prison. His family begged for years to have DNA testing done in his case, always maintaining his innocence. Last year, when DNA testing finally proved that Scott was innocent, he was freed.

Kevin Mark Weeks of Kentucky was proven  to be the killer.  His crime? The bludgeoning to death of an 89-year-old woman with a hydraulic jack.

Links you should check out:

The Innocence Project is a group of law students that work towards helping get DNA tests for people that claim to be innocent of the crimes they are charged with. From their website:

Most of our clients are poor, forgotten, and have used up all legal avenues for relief. The hope they all have is that biological evidence from their cases still exists and can be subjected to DNA testing. All Innocence Project clients go through an extensive screening process to determine whether or not DNA testing of evidence could prove their claims of innocence. Thousands currently await our evaluation of their cases.

The ACLU offers several opinions on DNA testing. From the website:

State and Federal DNA databanks are expanding at an alarming rate. A crime prevention tool that was originally intended only to track the most dangerous convicted felons, police departments and other law enforcement agencies across the country have begun collecting and permanently storing DNA from arrestees and other innocent persons. This trend not only represents a grave threat to privacy and the 4th Amendment, but it also turns the legal notion that a person is “innocent until proven guilty” on its head.

Get informed! There are a lot of other resources out there. I’d love to hear what you think about DNA databases.

That might be music to some of your ears. Particularly the rabid X Files fans that dreamed about doing the nasty with him. Don’t lie, you wanted Fox Mulder to abduct you and do “probes” to make sure you weren’t tainted by aliens. (Or something. I’ve never seen the show, to be honest. Sci Fi isn’t really my thing.)

However, Duchovny must think it’s a problem. The actor has entered rehab, releasing this statement:
“I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”

The actor’s publicist, Flo Grace, has confirmed that Duchovny is seeking treatment.

I haven’t seen his latest TV project, “Californication” on Showtime, but apparently ol’ boy plays a character that is sex-obsessed. Life imitating art?

David starred in “The X Files:I Want to Believe” this summer. (Did anyone see that? I had zero desire to. Pardon the pun…)

David has been married to actress Tea Leoni since 1997, and they have two children.

Hm. Either he legitimately has a problem OR his wife caught him running around dipping his wick into everything that moves and she told his ass would stay if he rehab and make a public statement about it so everyone knows he’s a Filthy McNasty. Stranger things have happened, us women can be brutal.

Late last night California Democratic President pro Tem, Don Perata, scheduled a vote on a compromise proposal that would end the state’s budget stalemate.

The vote will take place today at 10am, just as California was set to break the record for the longest amount of days into a fiscal year without an operating budget.

I certainly hope they’re able to get this done, as they (and I mean everyone) has been displaying an astounding amount of ineptitude over the last 59 days.

I’ve written about this several times over the last few weeks, check out the related links for more.

If you’re kind of lazy and don’t feel like going back to the older links read below. It the text of a revision to the budget proposal put forth by Governor Schwarzenegger last week and will give you a decent overview:

California’s budget problem has reached crisis proportions. After months of negotiation, the Administration and the Legislature have yet to agree on a plan for solving the state’s budget shortfall this year, eliminating its long-term structural deficit, and reforming the budget process to prevent such a crisis from recurring.

The Governor believes that to solve the budget crisis and move forward, the state needs to do all of the following:

Make major reductions in programs to bring spending in line with a realistic long-term revenue projection.

Provide for a temporary increase in revenues to see the state through the next several years of anticipated slow economic growth.

Modernize the state’s lottery and securitize expected increased revenues to pay off General Fund debts or contribute to the “rainy day fund” (Budget Stabilization Account) to help see the state through the next three years.

Enact major budget reform that will prevent future legislatures and governors from committing temporary surges in revenues to ongoing program expansions or tax cuts, and that will provide a rainy day fund and mid-year cut authority to address future downturns in revenues.

The last two components of this plan both must be enacted by the people. Budget reform can only be achieved with a constitutional amendment, and lottery reform requires amending both the Constitution and an initiative enacted by the people in 1984.

In the absence of these two components, the only alternatives to solving the state’s budget problems will be massive program cuts and/or major tax increases. The Compromise reflects lessons learned after months of negotiation with legislative leaders of both parties. It is a plan that has components that are objectionable to all parties—including the Governor.

UPDATE: Sad, sad news. Kiron, the baby born with 2 heads in Bangladesh has died. Kiron was born Monday. He died at home late Wednesday, apparently suffering from a high fever and breathing problems.

His parents had decided to take him home because they couldn’t afford the medical treatment necessary for Kiron’s unique case.

The baby’s doctor said: “We wanted to refer him to a hospital in Dhaka but the family was so poor that they could not afford to take him there, so they took him home where he died.”

++++++++

Is it wrong for me to be creeped out by this picture?

The baby, named Kiron, was born by C-section in southwestern Bangladesh on Monday.

Mohamad Abdul Bari, the doctor that delivered him, said of the baby: “He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths. He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs. He was born from one embryo but there was a developmental anomaly”.

Other than the fact that he has TWO HEADS, Kiron seems to be doing pretty well “He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths. He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs,” said Dr. Bari

Thy have not yet been able to determine whether he has one or two sets of vital organs. (Maybe they should take the baby to a larger city where Xrays and MRIs are available to help them determine how best to treat Kiron?)

About 150,000 people have gathered near the hospital when they heard that a two-headed baby had been born, forcing the local police to place officers outside. Many of those well-wishers have left money for the family.

Ok here’s what I wanna know. Will he talk about of both mouths? If he has two brains, will it be like 2 people having independent thoughts but sharing all other organs? Do they need to come up with a name for the other head or is it just Kiron for both? Are they technically one or two?

I realize that’s insensitive but seriously, WTF, that’s some amazing stuff right there.
