Today’s dumbass: Chinese baseball catcher Yang Yang. In an ugly 9-1 loss to Team USA yesterday, Yang Yang acted like a true dumbass.
The game was getting away from the Chinese as the late innings started to approach and the US holding a 4-0 lead. The Chinese pitchers apparently upset at their losing started to hit the US batters where they ended up hitting 5 US players during the duration of the game.
US center fielder Nate Schierholtz was hit in the 6th inning by Chen Kun. Schierholtz eventually made it to third-base. A shallow pop fly to center field by Terry Tiffee allowed Schierholtz to attempt to score on a tag. He ran into and obliterated Chinese catcher Yang Yang as a sort of redemption and then touched home plate to score. Schierholtz’s actions upset the Chinese and Yang Yang to the point where his teammates had to hold him back.
US right fielder Matt LaPorta was then intentionally hit in the head with a pitch thrown from Chen Kun who was immediately ejected.
Batting in the top of the 9th with the Chinese losing 9-0, Yang Yang hit a home run. He then proceeded to run the bases with his fist in the air as if he had just won the World Series with a home run in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7. When he reached home plate he stomped on it as if trying to send a resounding statement to the world.
Hey, dumbass, you lost 9-1 and were demolished at home plate by a freight train because your pitchers can’t control where they throw a baseball. I don’t condone unsportsmanlike conduct but I regret that Schierholtz didn’t hit you harder. If you get a chance to see the highlights of this game, please do.
First the whiny Swedish wrestler and now this. What’s the trend with dumbasses at the Olympics lately?
Remember this bone head? Ara Abrahamian was disqualified and stripped of his bronze medal for showing his complete lack of sportsmanship when he refused to accept the bronze medal he won, tore if off his neck, threw it down on the ground and skulked off.
“It was felt that his behavior on the medal podium and during the medal ceremony was not appropriate,” IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said. “His behavior was not in the Olympic spirit of respect for his fellow athletes. Whatever grievances you may have, this was not the way to go about it.”
In happier news, Abrahamian was awarded the gold medal for “world’s douchiest athlete”. Congratulations!
That’s right, everyone. More Spanish athletes being very unfunny with their racially charged “humor”.
That photo is of the Spanish Women’s Tennis team. It can still be found on the team’s website along with the caption “Estamos preparados para China”, which translates to “we’re prepared for China”. The picture was taken back in April, when team Spain was preparing to play team China in the Federation Cup.
At this point, it would appear to me that some of the Spanish athletes are ready for a new team uniform. One that looks like this:
Zing!
In all seriousness, though, this behavior is insensitive, stupid, and completely devoid of humor. So far, the basketball team has yet to issue a real apology, only saying that they didn’t mean to offend anyone.
Hopefully the tennis team is a little bit more proactive in seeking forgiveness for their ridiculousness than the basketball team has been.

Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw a hissy fit at the Olympics today. Ara was upset about a judge’s decision that ended up putting him in third place on the medal podium instead of the first place finish he apparently thought he deserved. As you can see from the video below, after accepting his medal, he takes it off, throws it onto the wrestling mat, and storms off like someone just told him his singlet made him look fat.
Between guys like this and the Spanish basketball team, what are we teaching aspiring athletes about sportsmanship? I realize he felt wronged and was probably very upset, but ol’ boy could have handled it with some more class, accepted the medal with grace, and then look into whatever recourse he has (probably none) for his dispute.

The Spanish Olympic basketball team is catching some major heat for a photo of the team in which the players “slanted” their eyes. The ads were for a Spanish courier company, Seur, a sponsor of the team. The offensive ad appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.
On an ironic note, it has come to light today that another of the sponsors of team Spain is Li-Ning Footwear. The Chinese company was founded by Li Ning, the former athlete soared around the top of Beijing National Stadium to light the Olympic cauldron is such a memorable way.
Debates have begun in Spanish media about whether or not the ad was racist and the newspaper El Mundo has even taken the position that the foreign press is trying to smear Spain’s good name.
Several players and coaches on the team have said they don’t understand what the big deal is. In an interview, Jose Calderon of the Spanish basketball team (who plays for the Toronto Raptors) said: “We did it because we thought it was going to be something nice, something with no problem. But somebody wants to talk about it. It is too much of a big deal with you guys (the media) and everybody talking about that.”
I’m really hoping that Calderon didn’t actually think it was going to be “nice” and that he just lacked for a better English word to describe it.
George Wu, deputy director of The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released a statement saying “it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity.”
Madrid, Spain is a contender for the 2016 summer games. It’ll be interesting to see whether this controversy hurts their chances.
You know, come to think of it there’s a certain presidential candidate who just might appreciate the basketball team’s humor…
