McCain: “I hate gooks”
Written May 30th, 2008 at 8:36pm in News, Politics

Why am I sort of not surprised by this statement?

“I hate the gooks,” McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. “I will hate them as long as I live.” This quote came from John McCain in 2000.

Look, I get it. He was a POW, subjected to horrible things at the hands of his captors, but does that make it OK to use that sort of language? Nope. McCain did say he was referring to his prison guards and would continue to do so in those terms that “might be offensive to some people”

Imagine a meeting with the leader of an Asian country:

“Good morning, Mr. President, it’s an honor to have you in our country”

“Well, good morning there, gook face, why don’t you go do some math and make me up some chicken fried rice?! I am starving after my flight. Hurry it up there, Jackie Chan”

Oh, and as long as we’re speaking about McCain and his captivity in Vietnam, he was allegedly called “songbird” by his captors because he was so willing to give up everything they wanted to hear for fear of being tortured. There are also allegations of preferential treatment once the Vietnamese found out he was the son of an Admiral. I obviously have no way of independently verifying any of the above, but it’s food for thought.

Obviously whether or not this bothers you is completely up to you, but is this really something you’d like to hear out of the mouth of someone that could potentially lead this country?

  1. Why would you be surprised. They tortured him for years. who knows how any of us would react in that situation.

I don’t think fighting violence with ignorance is going to solve anything. People already feel maligned and left behind in this country and I trust Mr. McCain is smart enough to know that his words, no matter how he meant them, may be taken differently. Remember, perception is everything.
